How to Handle Medication Tablets Properly
Basic information about tablets
Nowadays, medicines come in various forms. They may be in
liquid form like syrups, extracts, and even teas or juices,
or they may also be in solid form like powders, granules,
and pills. One of the most common forms of medicine is those
that come in tablet form, which are classified as
pills. They may
be in different shapes and colors, with small sizes to allow
for easy swallowing. The different colors are for easier
identification; oftentimes, pills also have engraved letters
or symbols, also for identification purposes. There are also
those which come in capsule shapes and are called caplets.
Tablets provide convenience because they are easy to take,
easy to store and bring around at work, in school, or in any
trips. Tablets are usually taken orally, but there are some
that are taken rectally, intravaginally, and sublingually.
They contain active ingredients that usually come in powder
or granule form that are pressed to form compact-shaped
pills. Some are coated to mask the strong taste and odor of
some of the active ingredients. Coatings also aim to prevent
the active ingredients from being ingested through the skin,
especially by people who are not supposed to take them.
Flavorings are also sometimes included to improve the taste.
Advantages of medication tablets
As the most popular form of oral medicine, you can see it
being used by almost anybody who has an ailment. Kids,
however, are not yet prescribed with pills much because they
might choke on them or find them hard to swallow. But there
are also smaller pills that are just designed specifically
for children. As for bigger kids and adults, this form of
medicine is most convenient when it comes to size,
packaging, and even taste. Since it is small and compressed,
the undesirable taste of most of the active ingredients of
the medicine cannot be tasted or has been masked. Unlike
syrups or suspensions which are in liquid form, taking pills
does not include having to use a spoon or special measuring
medicine cup. When you need to take pills, all you have to
do is to pop it into your mouth and gulp in some water.
Tablets packaging and storage
Medicines are supposed to keep us healthy and cure our
sicknesses, but we should take note that they also have
shelf lives. There happens to be a designated number of
years as to how long you can store your medicine without it
getting expired, just like any other food or wellness
products. Before taking any form of medication, take note of
its expiration date and store it in a proper place to
prevent its premature expiration. Taking in expired drugs
can cause severe effects on your health. Also, take note of
the storage temperature, which refers to the right
temperature you should keep your pills in. It usually
instructs consumers to store the pills in a cool and dry
place, so as not to melt it and break it down. When you
buy pills,
it comes in various packages as well, such as bottles or
foil and plastic pill beds. It is important to keep them
away from moisture and hot areas that could make their
environment humid, because when exposed to moisture, tablets
can easily disperse after swallowing and might cause
excessive and premature release of the effects of the
medicine. If your medicine has been stored for a long time
and you notice any discoloration or deformity, refrain from
taking it unless your doctor or pharmacist allows you to. If
you take daily medications of many different medicines,
keeping a pill case is also fine. Just be sure that your
pill case is airtight and is kept in a dry and cool place.
This can help you keep track of your medicine intake and
also make sure your meds are safe.
Precautions on taking tablets
Before taking your medication in
tablet form, you
have to take note of some things. Make sure you are taking
the right dosage. One pill of the same medicine may have a
different dosage and strength from another, so take note to
read the labels well. Know if it can be taken with or
without food, or if you are supposed to take it with water
or any other beverage. Overdose is dangerous and may cause
damage to your system and may even be fatal. Take only what
you are supposed to take and be sure to read all precautions
and indications in the labels. Always consult your doctor
for security and assurance if you are unsure about anything.
Also, be familiar in how your medications look like so as to
avoid confusion and mistakes on taking it. Be aware of some
conditions that may interfere with the effect of your
medication or that may trigger some side effects to avoid
them.
